Unpacking

Sara Smollett

Summer 1997

unpacking today
unpacking now
unpacking myself
unfolding
untwisting
undoing
because I have no choice
but to undo what you have started
because I can't finish it
by myself

why am I wearing this statement of who I am
not
because I don't know who I am
sculpt this rock
away
and what remains is
nothing

cracks seen clearly
what is outside
and what within
potential is a loaded word
like loaded dice
rolled fairly
like fate
flip a coin
and call it heads again
and again
and don't stop asking questions
or you lose
yourself.
