Network Printing

Where are there printers I can print to?

There are networked printers located in College offices (for faculty and staff use only), the library, all of the computer labs, and the dormitories. Duplex (double-sided) printing may be done to the library.

How do I set up printing?

In MacOS 8/9?

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select Chooser.
  2. Click on the LaserWriter 8 icon to display a list of networked printers.
  3. Double-click on the printer which you would like to setup.
  4. You can select a printer driver from the list if you know what kind of printer it is or you can just choose Generic.
  5. This should set up a printer icon on your desktop. If there is a bold outline around it, it is your default printer and anything you print will automatically print to that printer unless you tell your application otherwise. You can set a printer as default by clicking on the printer icon once to highlight it and then selecting Set Default Printer from the Printing menu.

In Mac OS X?

  1. Open the Print Center application from Applications and then Utilities.
  2. Click on the Add Printer... button.
  3. Select LPR Printers using IP and enter the name of the printer you would like to print to (for a list of printers see http://cms.simons-rock.edu/printers.php) and click Add..

In Windows 95/98/NT/2000?

  1. Select Run... from the Start menu and type \\PRINT.)
  2. Double-click on the printer you would like to use.
  3. Windows will ask you to click Yes to set up a printer.
  4. If you need to print from MS-DOS programs, select yes when asked; otherwise, just click Next$>$. Select the type of printer. All of the networked printers are HP LaserJets, so choose HP from the Manufacturers: menu. The type of printer may be listed in the comment field next to the printer name in the Print window. Many of the printers are HP LaserJet 4/4M Plus PS printers. When you have selected the printer type, click Next$>$. Windows probably needs to install the driver or it may have one already.
  5. After the driver is installed, you will be asked for a printer name and whether or not to use the printer as your default printer. Click Next$>$ after you have entered this information.
  6. You may choose to print a test page. Select Finish. This will place a printer icon in the Printers folder, located in Settings from the Start menu.

In Windows XP?

If setting up printing in a way similar to the above instructions fails (access is denied), try any/all of the following: delete any WAN-Adapters, delete any Firewire-Ethernet bridges, go to properties on the ethernet connection, and disable the authentication stuff (Smartcard/MD5) as well as the firewall, and reinstall the printer. The printer is out of paper or gives a toner error. What do I do?

Extra paper may be available near the printer. If you can't find any, send email to ca. If the printer complains that the toner is low, you may be able to get many more printed pages out of it by shaking the toner cartridge. If the toner really is low, email ca.
