Simon's Rock maintains several phone lines and modems for such use. These
lines are primarily intended for use by students. Faculty and staff looking
for an Internet connection should consider getting a local ISP. Because
there are few phone lines, dial up connections are limited to three hours.
If you are disconnected, you will need to wait for 10 minutes before
reconnecting.
The phone number to dial is 528-7402 (or 1-413-528-7402). Additionally, you
may need to specify the DNS Servers which are 64.209.120.70 and
64.209.120.69. Instructions for specific operating systems follow.
- Go to the TCP/IP control panel, located in Control Panels
from the Apple menu.
- Select PPP in the Connect via: menu and Using PPP
Server from the Configure: menu.
- Then go to the Modem control panel and make sure that it is set
properly for your modem.
- Open the Remote Access (or PPP) control panel.
- In the Number: field, type in 528-7402.
- Close the window, saving changes when prompted.
- Open the Internet Connect application.
- Set Configuration: to Internal Modem.
- If you do not see an option that says Phone number, click on the
triangle to the right of the Configuration line to expand the window.
Enter 5287402 for the Phone Number:.
- Click on the Edit... button to open the Network System
Preference.
- Under the TCP/IP tab, set Configure to Using PPP.
- Under the PPP tab, make sure the phone number is set correctly.
- Click Save and close the System Preference window.
- Click on My Computer, then C, and then Dial Up
Networking to open the Dial Up Networking folder.
- Create a new connection by clicking on the Create a New
Connection wizard. Answer the questions it asks you.
- Once you have created a new connection, right-click on its icon and
select Properties. There are a few changes you will need to make for
the Simon's Rock network.
- Click the Server Type tab. Only Enable software
compression and TCP/IP should be checked.
- Close the window.
- From the Start menu, select Settings and then Network
and Dial-up Connections.
- Double-click on the Make New Connection icon to start the
Network Connection Wizard. Click on the Next
button.
- Click on the Dial-up to the Internet radio button and click the
Next
button to open the Internet Connection Wizard.
- Click on the third radio button (I want to set up my Internet
connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network
(LAN)) and click Next
.
- Click on the first radio button (I connect through a phone line
and a modem) and click Next
.
- Type in 528-7402 in the Telephone number: text box. Check
or uncheck the Use area code and dialing rules option as needed.
- Click on the Advanced... button.
- Under the Connection tab, make sure that PPP (Point to
Point Protocol) is selected.
- Under the Addresses tab make sure Internet service provider
automatically provides one is selected for IP address only.
- Click the OK button to close the Advanced Connection Properties
window. Click Next

- You may type your username and password in the User
name: and Password: fields or leave them blank; click Next
to
continue.
- You may choose to rename your connection and click Next
.
- You may choose to configure your email settings at this time, by
checking Yes and Next
or you may click No, Next
,
and Finish to leave email settings unchanged.
- From the Start menu select Control Panels. Click on the
blue underlined words to the left that say Show all Control Panels.
Make sure that you are in Classic View (there's an option on the left
panel).
- Open Network Connections and click on Make new connection.
- Click Next when the wizard pops up and choose the radio
button for Connect to the Internet. Click Next and choose the
radio button for Set up my connection manually.
- Click Next and choose the radio button for Connect using a
dial-up modem. Type in Simon's Rock for the ISP name: and
click Next. Type in 528-7402 for the phone number and click
Next.
- Enter your username and password. Click Next and then Finished.
- Now locate the dial-up connection icon that you just made and
double-click on it. Make sure the phone number is correct.
- Click the Networking tab at the top of the window. Make sure
that the type of dial-up server you are calling is set to PPP.
- Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button below that frame.
- Click OK.

First you'll need to plug your phone cable into your modem and the wall
jack. Then, you need to locate the icon to connect. In MacOS 8/9 this is
the Remote Access or PPP control panel. In Mac OS X this is the
Internet Connect application. In Windows 95/98, you will need to find
the icon for the dial-up connection that you created. In Windows 2000, you
may need need to go to Start, then Settings, then Network
and Dial-up Connections to select your connection. In Windows XP
Professional, go to Start, then Connect to, and then Dial-up Connection.
If your computer does not automatically begin dialing, click on the Connect or Dial button. You may be prompted for your username and
password. Your computer will dial up. Once you are connected, you should
be able to access the Internet. Don't forget to disconnect when you are
done.
